Investing in People - 25/02/2010

We've just found out that Thorpe has retained the Investors In People Award for 10 years!  This is great news and thanks go to everyone here for all their efforts and hard work to ensure we reached, and keep maintaining, the criteria needed to retain IIP.

In the current climate, it is sometimes difficult to focus on training and marketing etc - you just want to get work in through the door!  But it is important to focus on these areas.  Keeping your staff training up-to-date can only be good for the long-term future of the company so that you can adapt and adjust where necessary.

Despite the economic downturn, Thorpe's continued with its external training in 2009 (a small amount of which was completed in early 2010) and even we were surprised to see what was achieved!

1018 training hours of external training
9 people achieved an NVQ qualification
13 others commenced self-paced learning and assessment, 12 of which will ultimately lead to an NVQ qualification
2 persons were helped financially with attendance at a University working towards a University degree qualification

So far, in the first 2 months of 2010, in addition to completion of some training started in 2009, 66 additional trainee-hours of externally provided training has been completed.

None of these statistics take into account the internal training and coaching that goes on day to day which, though unrecorded, is nevertheless of considerable value in maintaining Investors in People status and ensuring the Company's future ability to meet client and customer needs.

And you don't always have to pay large sums of money to get the training done.  Resourceful people here at Thorpe's have dug out relevant courses which are grant aided or free if you fulfill certain criteria so it "pays" to look around and see what is out there.
