Networking - 31/08/2009
You'd be amazed (or maybe you wouldn't!) at how many times you come across someone who knows someone who met someone at a particular event and are really interested in coming to see you about a job they want you to quote for etc.
Networking is one of those things that you sometimes feel you don't have the time to fit into your busy schedule but if you do, it can reap dividends further along the line be it financial or working in partnership to obtain a long term goal.
I am a member of CEFPI (the Council of Educational Facility Planners International - www.cefpi.org) which is a professional association whose sole mission is to improve the places where children learn - sound familiar?!
There are only three UK members and I know one of them and he works closely with one of our largest customers - how's that for networking?
The CEFPI Annual Conference takes place in Washington in September. Last year I attended as a representative of the BCSE (British Council for School Environments - www.bcse.uk.net) with whom Thorpe Kilworth has close links. I am attending this year as a personal member but having that connection with the BCSE enabled me to make contact with CEFPI which, in turn, has opened up a whole host of networking opportunities with like-minded US organisations connected/involved with education from whom we can learn and vice versa. Will any of it come to anything? Not sure but I believe it pays to network just in case it does.
